Open source advocates believe that software is not like other goods and should be open source because it is a public good that benefits society as a whole. They argue that software is different from other goods because it can be copied and distributed at virtually no cost, which means that the marginal cost of producing additional copies of software is zero. This makes it possible for anyone to use, modify, and distribute software without having to pay for it.

Open source advocates also believe that software should be open source because it promotes collaboration and innovation. By making the source code of software publicly available, developers can work together to improve the software and create new applications. This collaborative approach to software development has led to the creation of many innovative products and services.

In addition, open source software is often more secure than proprietary software because the source code is available for inspection by anyone. This means that security vulnerabilities can be identified and fixed more quickly than with proprietary software.

The total life-cycle cost of Open Source software is much lower than proprietary software. Every software project has an initial cost of design and implementation to the point where the software is ready to publish. But software needs maintenance and the cost of maintenance for open source software projects is much lower than proprietary software.

Finally, open source software is often more reliable than proprietary software because it is developed by a community of developers who are committed to improving the software. This community-driven approach to software development ensures that bugs are identified and fixed quickly, and that new features are added in a timely manner.
